Psalms 34: 4 – 6
I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.
This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles.
REFLECTION
David wrote this Psalm (Chapter 34) when he had fled from his son Absalom who wanted to take the throne from him. David’s life was in danger. Absalom fought him with all strength, earlier on Absalom had slept with the wives of his father at the roof top. I can imagine the pain David was in. He knew very well that his leadership was from God and how God had defended him from King Saul. It is like He was coming from one problem to another.
When David sought the Lord, He did not only answer him but he delivered him (David) from all his fears. Absalom died in the forest. 2 Samuel 18:9 Then Absalom met the servants of David. Absalom rode on a mule. The mule went under the thick boughs of a great terebinth tree, and his head caught in the terebinth; so he was left hanging between heaven and earth. And the mule which was under him went on. God was on his case. As if that was not enough, when Joab heard that Absalom was hanging on terebinth he killed him using darts.
Do not be afraid of your enemies, neither the raging waters nor the fiery fire, our God will fight your battle. You will emerge radiant and your face will know no shame.
“This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles.” At this point David was not feeling like a king. The difficult moments had reduced his self-esteem to zero, a man whose army had told him in 2 Samuel 2:3 “you are worth ten thousand of us now”.
No matter the size of the pit which the enemy has dug for you; the hand of God is well able to save you. Put your trust in Him and pray.
PRAYER
Oh Lord I turn to thee for help. You delivered David from all his fears and troubles. Save me from evil and deliver me from every scheme of the enemy. I put my faith in you.
Give me a radiant face and keep me from shame. I wait on you for salvation. This I pray in Jesus name, amen.
